C Cancer is the sheltering vessel — feeling that gathers and holds. It is the fourth of the twelve signs — a water sign held in the cardinal mode, ruled by Moon, the personality — the feeling nature and the habits of the passing self. It is a negative sign: it draws its energy in — receptive and self-contained, meeting the world by taking it in.
Its element is the ground of its nature. As a water sign, Cancer works on the astral plane of feeling — emotion, memory and the tides of the inner life — a temper sensitive, sympathetic and receptive, reading a room before a word is said, which under strain can run to being flooded by feeling until the shore of the self is lost.
